Germany is known for its engineering expertise, so expect no less from the country’s only 3D printer manufacturer. voxeljet makes 3D printers used by customers in the automotive, aerospace, film, architecture, engineering, and consumer product industries. (3D printers are used to build product prototypes, props for movie sets, and casting molds for parts and components.) It also “prints” orders for customers who don’t want to spend up to $2 million on a 3D printer. To date, it has sold about 50 printers to such customers as 3M, Alphaform, BMW, and Volkswagen. Most of its sales are in Europe. In the US, its printers are distributed by 3D Systems. Voxeljet raised $85 million in its 2013 US IPO.
